LISTEN: Linn Holmes Delivers Vintage Feels on ‘Baby Blue’

Linn Holmes is no stranger to the spotlight. Now based in Los Angeles, the Swedish-born singer has shared the stage as a backing vocalist with luminaries such as Orianthi, Robbie Kruger (The Doors), Phil X (Bon Jovi), Cherrie Curie (The Runaways), and previous Australian X-Factor contestant, Julian De Vizio.

Now, Holmes is stepping out on her own. On May 31, she just released her second single.

Titled “Baby Blue,” the new tune is a spirited callback to the upbeat, piano-driven pop of the 70s. Holmes keeps the dynamic flair and storytelling spirit of the era alive, incorporating a potent groove and scorching guitars in support of an ultra-catchy melody.

“The song is a lighthearted pop song about love in a vintage daydream,” Holmes said.

“Baby Blue” was produced by Rev. Tom Chandler, and features the talents of Daniel Jakubovic on drums, guitar, piano and bass. Jenny Dang lends electronic production elements to the track, providing a modern sensibility to this timeless pop soundscape.

LISTEN: You’ll Be ‘Better Off’ After That Breakup

It can be tough to see at first, but the truth is, a lot of breakups are for the best.

New Jersey-based alt-rockers The Break Plans deliver that message in empowering fashion on their latest single, “Better Off” (released May 10). The tune combines scorching guitar work with an anthemic pop sensibility, providing a lift to anyone struggling with what comes next after a relationship.

“Heartbreak is really hard and can be incredibly lonely,” shares vocalist Colton Braun. “I wanted to talk about those experiences so many of us have had. What I’ve learned is that there’s a great deal of freedom that comes from finally letting go. Writing these songs with my band was the most cathartic thing I’ve ever done. I hope our listeners can relate and find comfort in it.”

The single — the first from the band’s debut EP, Mistakes Are a Friend of Mine (due Fall 2024) — marks a watershed moment in the band’s creative process, with guitarist Mikey Strawz noting that the band feels free to create music they love.

“This is our third cycle of releasing new music, and we’re allowing each other total freedom to write the songs that we want to make,” Strawz said. “It’s completely uninhibited and has helped the writing process immensely. After working with so many talented producers (Carl Bahner -The Wombats, Rob Chiarappa – Gray Scale/Jake Miller, Corey Mouch-Knox) and keeping a keen eye on modern pop music, we have a clear direction of what works for us.”

PHOTOS: Native Manor Heavy Hitters at 6th & Peabody

Have you ever been to a writers round where everyone, across the board, was really, really good? We have!

OK, that statement can apply quite a few times over throughout UMC history. However, the most recent example took place this past Wednesday at 6th & Peabody in Nashville, where Native Manor hosted the February edition of their Heavy Hitters round.

We caught (and captured) most of the night. Of course, there was no shortage of country, but this eclectic lineup featured a couple different shades of pop, and even some Latin and worship music.

Below, you’ll find a lineup breakdown, in case you’re looking for some new artists to check out. All of the artists are also tagged in this Instagram post.

6:30 p.m.: Keifer Wiley, Clayton Shay, The Dryes
7:30 p.m.: Noah West, April Kry, Ben Fuller, Noah Sotillo
8:30 p.m.: Sarah Darling, Jimencio, Trevor Martin, Kayley Bishop
9:30 p.m.: Mark Addison Chandler, Rebecca Brunner, AJ Gatio

Ready for a ‘Blank Page’ in 2024? Cooper Carr Has a Song for You

Feeling a tad uncertain as we head into 2024?

The silver lining behind that uncertainty is that you have the choice on where to go from here. Nashville-based troubadour and producer Cooper Carr delivers that empowering message on his debut single, “Blank Page.”

“This song is for the ones who aren’t quite sure what’s next. The ones who change the subject when asked about the future, because you’re afraid what you really hope and dream for is impossible,” Carr said. “The ones who are looking around at other’s seemingly quick success and wondering what the secret formula is. The ones who feel paralyzed by heartbreak. It can be so terrifying to look at the future and just see a blank page — but, it also means there’s endless possibility and opportunity out there.”

Currently, two versions of “Blank Page” are out in the world. The original version is a rollicking, acoustic-based tune that carries us toward our dreams as diligently as the steadfast march of time. The acoustic version is more pensive; the slower-tempo version features an emotive piano and string arrangement, which adds a new level thoughtfulness and depth. Meanwhile, Carr’s distinct tenor rings out to comfort us along the journey.

No matter your flavor, the message of “Blank Page” is clear: time is going to pass by, regardless of the actions we take. In that case, we might as well commit to living a life of purpose.
