Autumn has always been known as an emotionally-stirring time of year. As the warm summer sun fades and the seasons change, we assess the journey as we come to the year’s home stretch. We learn what to keep near, as well as which layers to shed.
These three songs deal with the latter part of that equation — and the ways we often struggle to do so, in search of brighter days.
Hear What You Should
The journey to Erin McLendon‘s self-titled EP — the follow-up to 2017’s full length debut, Making It Up As We Go — began in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We got our first taste last February, with the release of the raucous, unconventional love song, “Shakin’ In My Boots.” From there, we were treated earlier this year to a “Cell Block Tango” inspired tale of infidelity (“Millie”), followed by a cheeky nod to the holier-than-thou, titled “Sunday Crowd.”
The new record dropped in its entirety on Friday. Alongside the aforementioned moments, there are more memorable cuts that are sure to stir your emotions and have you nodding along.

I’m back in the saddle to supply you with this week’s fresh UMC20 playlist. However, the Sheriff isn’t back in town just yet. That’ll be in a few weeks, when I make my trek back to Nashville on Labor Day.

Who hurt all of you?
I ask out of genuine concern, because I did not have to look far into the submission form to find three songs about breakups and their aftermath for this week’s Songs You Should Hear. While each one is sonically different, they share a common thread: love has a dark side, and some of us handle its charismatic embrace better than others.
